Oil Equals Acne, Right?

by Kareem Rabaa

OIL = ACNE...RIGHT?

Oily skin is often associated with acne. But why does your skin produce oil? Sebaceous glands are found just below the dermis layer of the skin and are responsible for producing oil called sebum. Sebum eventually makes its way from the dermis to the surface of the skin through hair follicles and pores. Sebum is responsible for waterproofing the skin, as well as protecting the skin from bacterial and fungal infections. However like most things in life, sebum is best in moderation. Too much, and your pores become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, so you’ll probably be battling acne. Too
little sebum will result in dry, cracked skin.

LE CHATELIER’S PRINCIPLE - A CHEMISTRY LESSON

French chemist Henry Louis Le Châtelier’s claim to fame was “The Equilibrium Law”. The equilibrium law lets us predict the effect of a change in conditions to a system in equilibrium. You're probably thinking “I hated high school chemistry, what does this have to do with me?” In our case, the system in equilibrium is your body’s skin. Essentially, the Law of Equilibrium tells us that if your body detects dry skin, it will produce more sebum. If your body detects oily skin, it will stop sebum production. So by applying oil with a molecular structure similar to that of sebum to your face, you can actively trick your body into stopping excess sebum production. But oil equals acne, right? Science tells us otherwise.

So we’ve covered the root cause of acne: pores getting clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells. We also covered the Law of Equilibrium, which tells us by applying oils with a molecular structure similar to that of sebum to our faces, we can trick our bodies into stopping excess sebum production. Because of consumer stigma towards oil-based products, the vast majority of the acne products on the market use alcohol based ingredients in order to kill acne-causing bacteria in a poor attempt to get rid of existing zits. However the alcohol also kills good bacteria, called “flora”, and dries out your skin. The dry skin triggers the production of excess sebum by your skin, which clogs pores and leads to more acne. The truth of the matter is that once a zit appears, there is not much you can do but let nature take its course. We need to find more long-term solutions that get to the root of the problem.
